Good Morning, Good People is born out of a love for history’s most beloved saint, Francis of Assisi. Even though he died nearly 800 years ago, Francis has been a companion for my entire adult life. I’m not a Franciscan in any formal sense—I’m not even Catholic—but his life has informed and influenced me as I have wrestled with what it means to consider oneself a follower of Christ in the modern, post-Christian age. His love of God, of his fellow human beings, his reverence for animals and the natural world, his life of simplicity, resonated with me from the first time I read about him.

This love for Francis, and the love of pilgrimage came together for me in a unique way six years ago when I first got a chance to walk a portion of the Way of St. Francis, accompanied by my wife, Jane. A modern route along ancient paths, through the cultural and historical splendor of Italy, this pathway is unique in how it connects the person of Francis—through stories of his life—with the landscape of his homeland. My adventures in walking that route are described in my second book, Pilgrim Paths to Assisi: 300 Miles on the Way of St. Francis.

When I started accompanying and leading groups—and telling the stories myself—the need to write them down became apparent, and so this slim volume was born, a companion for pilgrims who want to understand deeper the meaning of this unique pilgrimage route.
